Maroondah Printing Pty Ltd

Ringwood, Victoria, Australia

Maroondah Printing Pty Ltd in Ringwood, Victoria, Australia has recently installed the T-51 on their GTO 52. Owner, Harry Pruis, well-known in printing circles as past president of the LIA (Vic) and his son, Robert, were in the market to add more capacity to their range of equipment. Having searched for a suitable two-colour GTO their attention focused on the T-51. As Harry said, "It would do a large percentage of our two-colour work at a fraction of the cost. As we run two GTO 52s, we decided to install a T-51 and not wait for numbering and perforating to be available at a later date. This turned out to be the way to go as we are very pleased with the performance and quality. It produces very good solids and is also capable of producing four-colour work (two x two colour). Setting up time is minimal as all adjustments are made easily."

Townsend Industries, based in Altoona, Iowa, currently manufactures a range of second-colour attachments to suit some eight different brands of offset presses. These presses are sold around the world under a variety of brand names. If you are the owner of an A3 format — AB Dick, AM, Doosan, Embassy, Itek, Ryobi or Toko/Pro-Print — chances are there is one of three types of units, known as the T-51, to suit your requirements.
The Townsend manufactured equipment is supplied to some 48 countries around the world by way of a substantial network of direct sales outlets and dealer operations throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and the Pacific. While some 80,000 units have been manufactured in the 42-year history of the company only a relatively small percentage of these units have been imported in to Australia. Limited dealer representation and subsequent lack of product support within the region has restricted such placements.

All this is about to change with the recent release of units to suit the Heidelberg 46 and 52 in conjunction with the establishment of Melbourne-based Townsend (Australasia) Pty Ltd. Directors Graham Castley and Bob Snowden, each with 25 plus years of experience in the local printing industry, are confident of establishing a user base of satisfied and loyal customers, fuelled by the introduction of units for the GTO. Add to this the ability to number, perforate and score while outputting two colours in one pass on a single colour GTO and it is easy to see how much more productive existing equipment will become.
The T-51 contains a variety of features including full capacity self-sufficient inking and dampening systems, as well as a plate cylinder designed to use the same plates as the parent press. In addition, no special fountain solutions or blankets are required. Basic controls are very similar to those used on the parent press, facilitating easy adaptation to the unit by the operator. The entire T-51 unit can be swung away from the parent press or put back into its normal operating position in about one minute. This gives the operator full access to the parent press when running single colour work.
Precise register is achieved as both colours are printed from the same blanket. While this is very important on every multi-colour job, it is especially advantageous when printing onto pre-finished stock such as envelopes where sheet register can be particularly difficult to maintain.
